Plantar fasciitis occurs when the strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflammed. This is typically a result of and abnormal amount of load/ stress that is placed on the tissue. In most cases, there is not one identifiable factor that causes plantar fasciitis to develop. However, many factors can make an individual more susceptible to the condition. These include tighter calf muscles, being overweight, and participating in new or increased levels of physical activity.

What can be done to treat this issue?

There are many conservative therapies that effectively reduce inflammation and correct the issue. Typically a combination of ice massage, stretching, new shoes, and orthotics will cure most cases. More severe and chronic cases may require non-steroidal or steroidal injections in addition to conservative therapies. A minority of patients may need minimally invasive surgery to clean up scar tissue and rid the area of chronic inflammation.
