Could it be My IT Band?

Could it be My IT BandMany athletes experience pain in their Illiotibial band (IT band). This area is the tendon on the outside of your upper legs that connects the pelvic bone to the knee. This tendon easily tightens when used, especially without proper stretching before and after exercising.

Causes of IT Band Syndrome

According to Scottsdale’s top-rated doctor, Mark Forman, DPM, MBA, FAPWCA, this syndrome occurs for several reasons, mainly due to lack of proper stretching.

Other causes include:
  • Preexisting tightness or injury.
  • Weak hip, gluteal, and abdominal muscles.
  • Walking or running uphill.
  • Long periods of time sitting.
  • Weak knee extensor, flexors, and hip abductors.
  • Consistent overuse with activities such as cycling and running.

Dr. Forman highly recommends proper stretching to combat this syndrome. We, at Put Your Feet First, are happy to show you many exercises to help you prevent the onset of IT band syndrome.

Is it Too Late?

If you are currently experiencing pain with your IT band, there are several actions you can take. Dr. Forman suggests:
  • Resting while interchanging an ice pack and heat, every fifteen minutes.
  • Taking over-the-counter medications to help reduce inflammation.

However, be aware that pain medication can mask true recovery. Therefore be sure to give your body the proper healing time.

If pain continues to exist after a week or two, Dr. Mark Forman highly suggests visiting your podiatrist. Again, Dr. Forman and his highly trained staff can help you quickly heal with the following remedies:
